There are several different types of new and used travel trailers and rvs available for people to enjoy traveling around by road for vacation or retirement. Before investing in one, future owners should familiarize themselves with the popular options. Finding the right recreational vehicle can make a big difference in enjoyment level.

The big difference in many RVs is whether you need to tow it or not. This can be seen in the difference between campers and motorhomes versus travel trailers like 5th wheels and pop up tent trailers. Depending on each individuals needs and situation, one or the other will be more appropriate. For those that don’t want to bother with another vehicle or don’t want to deal with hitches and setting up a trailer, a camper or motorhome may be the best choice. However, the costs are much more for these.

A motorhome is the type of rv that is like the tour buses that have all amenities and usually require a different license to be driven. These are often big and sometimes hard to maneuver in corners and turns. This is the drawback to having a vehicle that is fully self-contained.

A camper is usually a smaller version of a motorhome. They can have a full kitchen, bathroom and beds. Sometimes there are shells that can be mounted on existing trucks that can handle the capacity. This will allow them to access the area only when not moving. This is unlike a motorhome. But, the cost is usually much less.

As for travel trailers, the most popular are the hitch towed ones that come in all shapes and sizes from lightweight teardrop styles to large 5th wheel haulers. People that can’t afford a big motorhome or don’t have room to park it at home will opt for a travel trailer that can be towed behind a capable truck on a ball or receiver hitch. These can be more convenient depending on the needs of the family. Also, there are many trailer parks all over the country that can accommodate travel trailers of all types. This is not necessarily true of large motorhomes due to their size.

For those that want an alternative to camping tents, there are tent trailers that are very lightweight and can be pulled by normal cars like sedans and even hatchbacks. These will pop up with mesh siding to provide a sleeping, dining, and table area for campers that don’t want to sleep on the ground. Top brands like Jayco will have a variety of models to choose from.
